The quality of teak wood depends on the quality of the trunk and the proportions of the tree. Only a very small portion of very high-quality wood is obtained. Therefore, there is a significant price difference between standard FEQ quality and Superdecks. Given the high standards, sometimes only a few high-quality decking components can be sawn from a single trunk. The flawless length also plays a significant role in pricing.
Normal production consists of flat sawn (lying growth rings), half-quarter sawn (growth rings at an angle of approximately 45 degrees) and quarter sawn (standing growth rings).
Superdeck and Cap Rail (the railing on the bulwark) are typically selected from production using quarter-sawn pieces. This often represents a very small portion of the production run, and therefore the price is relatively high. Deck sections used to be 4 or 5 meters long, but this is now almost impossible due to the limited availability of old logs.
Because production in Myanmar has halted due to the coup, there are currently virtually no high-quality solid wood decking available. Consequently, the yacht building industry has had to make concessions in recent years regarding dimensions and quality. This is because Thai teak doesn't offer the dimensions (thickness, large widths, and long lengths) we were used to in the past. Therefore, we had to find a solution to continue meeting the demands of customers for larger yachts.
Royal Boogaerdt Timber has therefore developed a new laminated teak product.
